Insert your new Coder SD card into your Pi, make sure your Pi and your computer are plugged into the network, and power it up.
The Pi will be your new web server. Give it a minute to start up and then move on to step 3.
On your computer, visit http://coder.local/ in Chrome to connect to your new Coder and start playing.

To get started with Coder for Raspberry Pi, you're going to need, you guessed it, a Raspberry Pi. Get going for less than $50 with our recommended shopping list.
Once you've done your shopping, you'll need to download the Coder SD card image, and transfer it to your SD card. This is a big download, so it may take a few minutes.

An install program for Mac OS X is included, which will help you transfer the disk image to your SD Card. If you are using a PC, check out the instructions on the Raspberry Pi Wiki. There are several utilities that will allow you to install the image.

To connect to Coder using a Windows PC, you'll first need to install Apple's Bonjour Print Services for Windows. Once this piece of software is installed, you'll be able to visit http://coder.local in Chrome or IE.

Coder is an experiment for Raspberry Pi, built by a small team of Googlers in New York. It’s a free piece of software that turns a Raspberry Pi into a simple, tiny, personal web server and web-based development environment--just what you need for crafting HTML, CSS, and Javascript while you’re learning to code. It just takes ten minutes to set up and you’re ready to start experimenting with building real web stuff.
Coder runs great on the latest Raspberry Pi 2 Model B, but it was designed to be snappy on the original Raspberry Pi B and Raspberry Pi B+ hardware too.
Coder makes it more accessible to build web things on Raspberry Pi. For those new to coding for the web, it’s a private platform for building web programs. If you’re already a web programmer, Coder can also be a fun sandbox for experimenting with new ideas, or making demos for other people to learn from.
Coder is an open source piece of software that’s free to download. To run it on your Mac or PC, you’ll need a Raspberry Pi computer, a compatible power cord, the Google Chrome browser, and a 4GB (or larger) SD Card. You should be able to get an entire set-up for less than $50 – see our shopping list.
To help you get started, we've put together Coder Projects: simple, fun, and sneakily educational things that can all be made with Coder and Raspberry Pi. There are also a ton of resources for learning HTML, CSS and Javascript—Codecademy and Khan Academy, to name two—and you can use Coder to accompany this instruction as you experiment with making your own programs.
You can export any of your projects as a zip file and share them with anyone you’d like.
Coder can run off of a standard wired Ethernet connection. If you’d like to use a WiFi connection instead, you’ll need a compatible USB WiFi module for Raspberry Pi. For more on setting up Coder with a WiFi connection, see the WiFi link in the Getting Started section.
You connect to Coder via a web browser on another computer which is on the same network. To access your Coder, just wait a minute for it to boot, then visit http://coder.local on your computer.
Currently, this requires a bit of manual configuration of each device. We’re working on making this easier, but here's a guide for Using Multiple Coder Devices, which you'll find useful for setting up a small lab with several units.
To reset your Coder's password, place the Coder SD Card in another computer and place a file named "reset.txt" in the coder_settings directory. The reset.txt file doesn't need anything in it, and you can make it with any text editor. The next time your Coder boots using this card, it will find the reset.txt file and ask you to set a password, similar to the first time you started your Coder. All of your other data will remain on the device.
During setup, you will be asked to create a password for your Raspberry Pi, which you’ll need to be able to program and access your Coder. Everything you create on Coder is stored and hosted on your own Raspberry Pi, and your programs are private and accessible only to people who know your Coder password. A Raspberry Pi running Coder should be used behind a firewall, such as that provided by a typical WiFi router or home broadband network. In that configuration, a Coder device will only be accessible on your local network, and not the entire web.
Coder was designed to be an easy way to experiment with creating simple web applications, programmed using HTML and Javascript. There’s no specific age requirement—consider it appropriate for anyone who holds basic computer skills and is interested in learning to program.
